The American Cichlid Association is committed to conserving cichlids—both in their natural habitats and within the hobby. We believe that greater knowledge leads to deeper appreciation of these remarkable fish and their essential roles in the ecosystems we share.

Human-caused environmental degradation threatens cichlid populations worldwide. The ACA advances cichlid conservation through two key efforts:

  1. CARES Preservation Program
The ACA supports the CARES Preservation Program, which encourages hobbyists to maintain at-risk species, share offspring with qualified keepers, and build networks among aquarists, scientists, and conservationists. Each summer at the ACA convention, the CARES group distributes many at-risk species to members.

  2. Conservation Grants
The ACA also funds vital conservation research and programs through three grant funds:

  • Paul V. Loiselle Conservation Fund

  • Guy D. Jordan Fund

  • Wayne Leibel Fund

For details about each fund, visit the “Grants” tab in the menu.
