About More Mike Fake2 Fake3

“I met Mike Sheridan in the mid-1970's shortly after I joined the Elm City Aquarium Society in New Haven Connecticut. As it turns out, Mike was one of a contigent of notable aquarists (e.g., Chuck Davis, Kevin Carr, etc.) from the North Jersey Aquarium Society who would regularly journey north to support our show, and in return, we repaid the complement by traveling to their many and varied shows and workshops. In fact, several of us made the trip to various ACA conventions in the midwest driving marathon roadtrips, a dozen or so of us packed together in a huge Winnebago, shaking and weaving our way through the Poconos mountains, with buckets and boxes of fish: ACA or bust!, and having the best time doing so.Mike was a blunt-talking kinda guy who called me (correctly) an 'egghead' with equal measures of love and disdain. We got to know each other over our common love for New World cichlids. First with Mike judging my initial feeble show entries as a 'competitor', later Mike and I co-judging New World cichlid classes together with me all ears learning how to judge and mostly scribing for the great man, and more recently, Mike looking over my shoulder, kibbitzing and offering his opinion on why and how I had gone wrong judging these same cichlid classes on my own at the annual ACA convention. In his love for New World cichlids, Mike was way ahead of his time in the 1970's when the cichlid hobby overwhelmingly was about Malawi (then, Nyasa) cichlids. He was one of a very few ACA-ers who understood the interest and beauty of their New World counterparts. He was a close friend and tape correspondant of Guy Jordan and was there in ACA near the beginning. I count Mike as a mentor in the hobby and surely as a friend, and somehow two cichlid guys of very different backgrounds - he from the streets of New Jersey, me from the halls of academe - found a way, through our common love for cichlids, to forge a lasting friendship. I and ACA will miss Mike greatly but the life of this cichlid egghead was made all the richer for the thirty years I had him in my life, teaching and encouraging me.”
