Don't know when I'll get another chance to post. Life has been busy as.. well... busy.

I've still been keeping up with my fish. Been some time since I lost any and they are growing lke weeds.

A few weeks ago, I was figuring up some expenses and found that I was just spenidn way too much money on my fish. A while back, I had made my own herbivorous food, but this time, I decided to do something different with it. I decided to make a purely carnivourous diet.

This time I also decided to use no gelatin. I needed the gelatin in my herbivorous diet, because otherwise there was nothing that would hold it together, and, it would just look like someone threw some plants in the water, and I can't stand a messy tank. But the gelatin has almost no nutrition so I can't see a valid reason for adding it to the mixture.

So, the first diet ( my trial carni- diet):

1 lb of shrimp
1 lb of crayfish
2 cups of greens ( anything but lettuce)
2 cloves of garlic
5 drops of baby vitamins ( liquid)

I chopped all of this and then spooned it into ice cube trays. I didn't shell the crustaceans, as I know the fish can pick up colors from the shells of them. But the problem here, was that #1) I purchased steamed shrimp by accident and #2) I also purchased steamed crayfish. The fish ate it up, but left the hells, and talk about a messy tank! It looked disgusting and it took forever to pick them from the sand and rocks. Backup batch made... Oh yeah, I meant to do that... :)

Resipe Numero Dos

1 lb raw shrimp
1 lb raw crayfish ( uber hard to find)
2 cloves of garlic
5 mL of baby vitamins (liquid)

Okay, I know. That's a lot of vitamins, but let me say, my fish have never looked better. And some of my "hard to feed" species go nuts for it. So basically, all this raw stuff was chopped and spooned into ice cube trays and bagged. The fish eat the raw shells and there is virtually no mess.

Recipee Noomber Three

2 lbs of raw oysters, chopped
2 cloves of garlic
5 mL baby vitamins (liquid)

Bada bing, bada boom, you've got fish food. They eat it, your wife complains about you using her ice trays and worrying of her freezer smelling like fish, and WHATATAH!!! You've got an amazing fish food that your carnivorous fish will go nuts for.

Needless to say, I'm not a scientist or a vet and this is just something I tried that worked for me.

Anyway, everbody take care. Keep up the fun.

Wish I could've seen you all at the convention but duty calls.

Ciao,
John

This battle for the male results in no real damage and all three have lost color and took up their breeding patterns. Here's the FO. Benai male. I rarely see the females in the tank as they hide from the male. I believe they are breeding once again. I did a 90% water change twice this week....if that doesn't do it, time for Barry White.

Hello,
I have just started this hobby and I currently have pairs of Tiger Oscars, Jack Dempsey, Parrots, Fire Mouths and a single Green Terror.
I have recently viewed photos of beautiful cichlids that are native to Uruguay. Do any of you experts have these fish? Would anyone know where to get them in the US? I found a dealer in Canada and they can not ship to the USA due to our agriculture regulations.
Here are a couple of links:
http://www.livefishdirect.com/store.php?cid=37

http://www.aqvaterra.com/cichlids_other_fishes.php

I plan on putting these fish in a 40 gallon breeder or a 55 gallon tank.

Many thanks,
Mike

No more talk about the Beani any more, just wondering does anyone has anything that they would like to share about Beani? Has anyone been able to raise one to get full size? Is it possible to house them in the same tank with other cichlids, has anyone been successful in doing that? What are you feeding your Beani, and what temperature do you keep them in? How do you tell if you have male or female? They say that they are dimorphic in sex, so you should be able to look at them and determine their sex? Anything that anyone have to share about Beani would help in the learning/growth process would be helpful...
