Hello,

My

name is Rene and I live in Southern California. I keep central american cichlids and I am trying to

find a store or an individual that sells these type of fish. I am particularly interested in viejas

like: zonata, guttulata, godmanni, and fenestrata. I know that there is a website that has these

type of fish but the location is in New Jersey. The shipping will cost nearly as much as the fish.

There also is no guarantee that these fish will arrive alive. I wanted to see if there was another

option. If anyone sells these type of fish or knows someone who does please let me know.

Rene

Hi Rene, Welcome to the Forum. I haven't

shopped in So. Cal. in almost thirty years but there are some that visit here that do. Give us a

better picture of your location.. SD? LA? If you're an ACA member we have a Trading Post

online here. Initially it was open for viewing by visitors but now you have to be a member. So...

let's run a few options:

1. Join the ACA and post the fish you're looking for.

(I've checked- none are being offered currently.)

2. Join the ACA Yahoo group (free-

you'll need to establish a Yahoo ID), then post your request there. Here's a link:<http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/America...id_Association/ (http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/American_Cichlid_Association/)>

3.

Go to the ACA Convention in Sacramento in July and either buy them from a room, buy them at the

auction or establish a contact with another hobbyist there and have them ship to you when you get

home.

4. Post a request stating you live in So. Cal. and are looking for another cichlid

hobbyist in your area to give local info about stores and fish availablity. I'm not sure the

post in Central American Cichlids would bring the response you're looking for. I'd suggest

a title something more like "So Cal member ISO another with similar interests". Then

flesh out your request in the message. I think you'll get a lot more people reading your

post.
Again, welcome to the Forum. Dan

If you are in the Los Angeles

area, try The Aquarium on Sepulveda in Culver City and Ocean Blue on Katella in Orange. They have

better selections of Central Americans than most other stores.

Also, finding others to

join in on an order can reduce shipping costs.

great. I'd like to see a store or two in each area of the country on a list here, just for this

type of thing, barring that, I wish we had a contact in each area for local info. Maybe something

like that could be done.

I have a book around here somewhere... _The All-Star Fish

Stores of America_. I can't find it. I don't remember who wrote it and I'm sure

it's not current. If someone were to put another together there'd probably be a market for

it.

Years back the cichlid capitol of LA was Jobil's(sp) near LAX. People would fly

in Jobil's would pick them up at the airport, drive them to the store, and then return them,

with their fish, to the airport. I don't know if it still exists. Their specialty, at that

time, was Africans, mostly Tanganyikans. Dan

Hi Rene,

All of

Dan's ideas are great!!

You also should check out the COAST Club in Southern

California, you may find some good contacts in that club, although it is a general aquarium society

there are lots of cichlid people that hang out there. They have good speakers monthly as well as

an auction, a great place to meet local breeders.
