I just received 3 Geophagus neambi today. From what I understand they are a newly described species from the Rio Tocatins. I did a forum search on ACA and nothing came up. Are any of you guys currently keeping neambis? I put the trio in a 40 gallon breeder and pretty much had to come straight to work and I work 2 jobs every Wednesday so I won't be able to take pics until tomorrow night.

I would really like to see them. I have never heard of them and it would be great to see what they look like.

I like rare cichlids Smitty. I received The Wet Spot newsletter via email last week and they were featured but Anthony only had 10 specimens for sale, so I got lucky I guess. There's not too much on the internet on them if you google them. They resemble my altifrons and surinamsis, but their heads get really golden like my loisellei from what I've seen.

I did a quick search of images and found more than 6 photos. They are surinamensis like Geo's. They look like they will turn into nice fish as adults. I get the newsletter too and Anthony was pretty enthusiastic about them.
I have a pair of P. taeniatus Moliwe, some P. sacrimontis and some Kyathit danios coming next week.

This is an after thought. I did see the photos of the ones with the yellow but there were some photos that did not show the yellow. I also can't wait to see photos to see if they have those bright yellow heads.

The trio I got today are only about 4 inches, so it might take some time to color up. However I am a firm believer I clean water and a diverse diet and my altifrons look dramatically different now compare to when I got them about a month and a half ago, so I'm hoping to get these neambis looking right real soon. I'm still working and barely got a chance to check them out yet.

There is a photo of them on Aquabid, and there are still some for sale. I do see hints of yellow in the photo.

Fed them when I got home from my double at 6am and again at noon when I woke up to go back to work. They still appear to be a bit bleached out at the moment, probably from shipping but they are taking sinking Hikari Gold had Frozen Brine shrimp. I did notice when I woke up that 2 of the 3 are hanging out together and there was a bit off pecking going on when they would all meet up. Anthony said he tired his best to get me a trio and that may be a good sign.

I can already see how yellow they are already at this size in comparison to my surinamensis and altifrons.http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd62/decker69/IMG_0108.jpg

I wonder if this is the same fish that is being sold a Geophagus sp. Tocantins.

This was sp. "Rio Areoes". Someone finally named it.

That is the river it is said to be wild caught from Chromedome.

I think it was also marketed as Geophagus sp. Tocantins too. If that is the case I located some here in Ohio for less money.

The population "Rio Areoes" (I can't put the tilde mark over the o) has been around for several years. It seemed to disappear from the hobby for a while, but is noted for having two lateral spots, though sometimes only on one side. It is also noted for having a very yellow breast. According to Weidner, it is a relatively small member of the altifrons complex, only reaching 18-20 cm. Whether or not it was remarketed as Tocantins, I do not know, but apparently Rio Areoes is part of the Tocantins system, so that is possible.
Sometimes books are better than the internet, even when out of date - or especially when out of date. If you want to know about Eartheaters, Weidner's South American Eartheaters is still well worth the money.

That is a nice looking fish!
When I searched for images of Geophagus neambiRio Areoes (which is how Anthony listed them in the newsletter), I got hits for Geophagus neambi, Geophagus sp Rio Areoes, and Geophagus cf altifrons... and then the references to the Tocantins came up as well. I did check and see that Rio Areoes was part of the Tocantins drainage. I remembered seeing a fish listed as Geophagus sp Tocantins on a website. I am waiting for a return e-mail for prices. Oddly enough on the WETSPOT web site I believe they have them listed as Geophagus cf. altifrons "Aeros" WILD.

I will check that book out now. I do notice the neambis seem quite hyper in comparison to my altifrons and surinamensis.

Amazon says that book is between $400 to 600, is that corrrect?

I did a quick search using a search site for books that usually turns up a bunch of listings and only found 3 copies. I'll check some of the European sites I occasionally buy books from to resell and see if I can find some inexpensive copies. Yes about $4-6 hundred sounds about right on Amazon. They might just be hyper because they might still pretty fresh from Brazil. I have seen some wild caught fish take weeks to settle down.

Wow. I'd sell my copy for $400.
Contact Mike Schadle at mjschadle@comcast.net, I'd bet he has copies for waaaay less, since I got mine for a lot less than that. It may be out of print, would increase the price, but it still should not be in that price range. He carries a lot of fish books, especially Cichlid and Livebearer stuff, but just about everything else, too. With convention in Indie, he will certainly be set up to sell books there.

I found one copy in Europe for about $50.00 shipped. I'll watch for more.

I got my copy for $75 6 years ago. Since then the price has gone up as it has gone out of print. It is such a good reference that the demand has remained high.

I will keep searching, thanks for the info. I have an amazon account, but I used to find my college books really cheap in asia so I will get a copy eventually.
Had a MAJOR score today for my Neambi tank. I got a Giant Marbled Peruvian Whiptail Catfish aka Spatulalocaria sp "Rio Xingu". Its beautiful and I've never seen one in person before. I was told that some rare catfish wholesaler went bankrupt and that particlar LFS bought up some of their stock. It was 7in, beautifully marked w/ inch and a half steamers off tail. They have a couple other weird Loricaria too that I might go grab tomorrow.
Also thinking about raing the neambi w/ a pair of pindare. I think the neambi's lemon yellow and the pindare's red will look great together. I've been told that the neambi and pindare are less aggressive than altifrons and surinamensis, but I haven't been into Geos long enough too know for myself. My friend Mikey that runs 50 fathoms here in New Orleans, tells me how aggressive his abalios are. He got me into geos and I'm raising 5 Red Head Tapajos that he bred as well. My altifrons came from him as well but I haven't seen any aggression from them at all and they also have 2 small surinamensis in that tank and 2 daemons, but I do have a larger surinamensis in another tank that seems aggressive to a smaller wild ornatum and a peruvian green severum. I mostly keep True Monsters like Cichla, Crenicichla and exCichlasoma. Getting into Geos has really been exciting for me. I DJ 70 to 80 hours a week at the 2 biggest "Gentlemen's" clubs on Bourbon Street, but discovering new cichlid species is what excites me, LOL!

That is a cool whiptail, I think we got those in once. The Pindare seem to be pretty mellow, I have not seen any aggression at all from them so far.

Just traded in my big lyonsi and 6in male festae for the PAIR of Pindare and 5in Pink chalceus and a pair of Bolivian rams for the Misses. Somebody bought my festae before I left the shop. Met the guy and I know he's going to a good home. I will take some vids after I do water changes.

Oh yeah, I decided to get 3 more neambi so I can try group breeding as opposed to pairs and/or trios. Should be here Wednesday!!

Picture doesn't do them justice. I will take some video soon. That tank is pretty crowded right now because I got some other fish in, still moving the goodness around.
