View Full Version : menerambo juveniles need good homes

Hey...

Both

Lou Rovner and I have spawned and raised some P. menerambo recently.

We have some

available to good homes - since we'd like to get some of these established among knowledgeable

keepers... Obviously they're going to require space...

The two of us have raised a

batch of these - and I just separated yet another group that were born on Christmas day.

The ones that are ready for distribution came into the world in August.

Let me know if you're

interested.

Interesting that I've

only received interest on these fish from one source (joseG).... And I'm making arrangements to

ship him some fish.. What we're looking for is people who have the knowledge and interest to

help continue this species - at least in captivity (for now...)..

The menerambo is

pretty prolific. The "christmas babies" are doing well. And I've just partially

removed another spawn (took about 40 and left parents with about 15).

The reason

we're able to succeed in raising these spawns seems to be very warm water (84 degrees and

above). I'm hoping we can find others that are willing to commit space to this fish.

I've been keeping

menerambo for a few years, half dozen spawns, but never any fry. My temp is approx 80, sounds too

low from what you say. Any other tips? Are you keeping them in aquaria or ponds?<!--quoteo

Paretroplus menerambo information can be found most anywhere- certainly an internet search will

be prductive. They are extremely endangered - and reportedly extinct in nature. The only chance

these cichlids have of surviving is in captivity right now - with the ultimate hope that conditions

in Madagascar can be improved someday.

The temperature of 84+ degrees has to do with preventing massive die-offs post free-swimming

stage - and was the difference for us in raising them successfully. They'll spawn in water much

cooler than this. Almost all reports have these fish spawning in pools, ponds are very large

aquaria. They spawned for me in a 6foot 180 gallon aquarium with lots of large bogwood pieces.

Water conditions don't seem critical - although they seemed to be sparked by large weekly water

changes. That tank had 7 large menerambo in in when they spawned. I previously had two lamena and

four polleni in the tank with them and although they always went through the motions of spawning -

they weren't successful until I removed the other species. Vitually immediately (within a

couple days) upon removal of the other species (accompanied by 70 percent water change...) - the

spawned. And spawned again while the fry were just free swimming.

As far as fry care -I

kept the fry in very small tanks- changed 50% twice daily (preheated and treated replacement water

of course) the high temperature noted above - heavy feedings of BBS worked.

Lou Rovner

canvassed everyone he knew who worked with these fish - and it was Alex Saunders who provided the

temperature tip.

Hope it helps!

Let me know who would like to take on

this fish - we need to help them survive - If I'm convinced I'm dealing with people who are

interested in commiting to try to save this fish - the only thing I'll be looking for is

shipping costs..

Thanks for the info John, I

have 6 menerambo in a 5" tank with 5 lamena. Looks like I need to rehouse the lamena

(insentive to shortly get some to you Bob). After each water change they do start shimmying,

ordered a couple new heaters moments ago. How about your other menerambo? did you need to separate

them from the spawning pair, divider maybe? When I tried to keep mine as solitary pairs, they

didn't do well.

In these pics, the eggs were white, and immediately eaten. The spawn

before, the eggs were pink and lasted a day or so.

Great fish and luckily *not*

extinct. Last year a friend of my friend Olaf Pronk, rediscovered this speceis in a lake in the

Sofia/Bemarivo flood plain of Madagascar. He now has in his tanks the frist Wild caught Menarambo

since 1997! Unfortunaltey none can be bought out of MAdagascar.

Congratulations John and

Lou.
I hope some one takes you up on your fry offer. It seems like every fish room visitor is

in awe of menarambo. I still find them very beautiful.

In my fish room Paretropleus

menarambo spawned when temperature increased.

So not only are increased temps needed

to raise fry but it helps to stimulate spawning. I have been too busy to raise fry lately.

Previously I found raising fry to be fairly labor intensive with a many daily feedings, perferable

live food and clean water.

Hello John,

I have been interested in these fish for years. I've read about them in an article titled

Cichlids of Jurassic Park, by Paul V. Loiselle. If you have any more that you can part with,

I'd be very interested in purchasing some of these rare and endangered fish from you. I

currently have four tanks set up in my fish room: a 240,a 135, a 40, and a 20. I mostly keep

central american and south american cichlids. However, I do have three nossibeensis which are also

from Madagascar. I know that you've already had 89 responses. Please contact me at

monoargent@aol.com if you have any of these fish left.

Hi, John -

I

am assuming the four Menorambo that I picked up at the Babes auction last Saturday night came from

you ? I think there were a couple of bags of 6 smaller ones and a couple of bags of 2 larger ones

each, sold. I got 2 bags of the larger ones - a total of 4 Menorambo for $40. A steal.

The fish are doing great, look amazing, and are all eating heartily. The smallest of the 4

looked like it was having trouble in the hotel room but we left early to get them home on Sunday

and all are doing great now. If these fish came from you, thank you for sending such amazing fish

to the auction ! Hopefully I will have success in spawning them when they are a bit

older/bigger, too.
