ALoha guys. I just came

accross this site and have been an avid fishkeeper for a while now. I am currently in a situation

that i'm not sure about regarding crossbreeding. i have a 125gal with a large male dovii or

wolf cichlid and what i had thought to be a male midas. well it turns out the midas was a female

and last night i noticed that they were breeding together. the question i have is could these two

produce fry and should i let it continue or kill the bastard species? i am curious to see if they

will produce offspring but not sure how they will look or act. anyone ever heard of a breeding

situation like this before? thanx for the help guys.

Many of the cichlids will

interbreed. There probably is NO market for your fry. If you wanted to let of few of your offspring

grow near adulthood just to see what they'd look like it'd take almost 2 years. Not many

have the patience or space for that. I'd probably leave them alone. The adults will probably

consume the fry. I'm in the minority. Most here would tell you to syphon the eggs or fry and

flush them. Dan

I had a festae and a midas

breed in my cichlid community tank and thought as well for a moment to let 1 or 2 grow out just to

see what they look like but then what to do with a hybrid that will grow past 12" and like Dan

said it will take 2 years and lots of food and tank space for them to grow. So once they were about

1/4" I took most of them out and put them into another tank where they were quickly eaten. Now

I have still about 8 left at 1/2" size and they are getting less every day since the pike

cichlid that is in there waits all day for the mom to be distracted or 1 of the fry to wonder off a

bit to far.

do not want hybrids around

because it makes it hard to find the true pure species.

like they said, dont have to

kill them just let them get eaten, but please do NOT give them away - friends or stores - .

Nothing wrong with enjoying hybrids as long as you don't give it away

or let it breed imo. If you like the fish and it's pretty, then by all means enjoy it as long

as it lives with you. http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

I am brand new to cichlid

keeping. I have a large Convict and a medium Jack Dempsey. Will they breed? Or can they? Thanks

for any info. Michelle

Heres a new one. Im not one to

condone crossbreeding, and try to avoid it. What i thought to be a male Nimbochromis livingstonii

turned out to be a female. I just watched her and my Nimbochromis venustus spawn. They ought to be

some wierd fry, will have to see what they look like. Since they both are similer as juviniles. I

new the Nimbochromis species took some time and had to be 3-4 in+ before they would begin to spawn.

but i would have swarn that livingstonii was a male.

I am not the most familier with SA cichlids but i do not believe those

2 species will spawn.
