Hi, any idea what these are?

At first glance, I thought of a fish that had its scales removed and still managed to heal. However, a closer look suggests a piebald strain, which I'd not heard of before. Very interesting. Makes me curious about the genetics, but that's my first thought about most things like this!

nope young rotkeil severum just not a very good strain. When young my Rotkeil's would get blotchy black spots at times and even now 2yrs later rarely if ever get the stripes

I am thinking they could be.........Fish
and possibly male and female

pitdogg2 is correct. I did a little searching after seeing his post, and did find a very few pictures of adult Rotkeil with no stripes. It appears to me to be a distinct and uncommon line; NOW I'm curious if this is something that occurred in captivity, or whether there is a specific wild population!
Very interesting, I'd love to see continued photos of these fish as they develop!

Thanks for the replies fellas. It sounds like you guys may be onto something. Can you provide a link or a photo of the rotkeils you're referring to?

Unfortunatly I believe they are a rotkiel hybrids, I am seeing these more and more, People think all Heros species are "severums" and randomly cross the different species. Ken

I do think you are correct. It also may be driven by money,my LFS will only order them if you buy 3 or more and the cost they want to sell them at is 100.00ea. prepaid and no refunds. I laughed so hard I think I pulled a muscle. I told the owner that I would travel to St. Louis or Chicago before I ever gave him one red cent. The last time I played his game was when I had him order Synsplius for me. I was on the phone with him to hear the conversation with the distributor who guaranteed him he had some in stock that were the most colorful he had seen in a few years. Since this was a fish he felt he could not sell well I promised to by the 12 at 6.00ea. one dollar over his cost.....6mo later I was looking to trade my Bifasciatus cichlids.
To the OP just google Rotkiel Severum you'll have plenty of images to look at.
