View Full Version : getting silicone "stain" off glass?

I have a used tank and a
background was once used in the tank itself.
The silicone they used has left a mark on the
glass. Is there an easy way to get it off completely? It won't scrub off and before I see if a
razor blade can do a better job (and I avoiding scratching the glass!) I wanted to see if
anyone knew of a trick or two...

Acetone is the solvent used in silicone
sealant. You can use it to remove the last little bits, but a razor blade is best for removing most
of the sealant. Acetone is a known carcinogen, so I recommend using it with rubber gloves in a well
vetilated area.

I have not seen spec
sheets for aquarium silicone so perhaps the solvent is acetone.
My nose tells me it is
acetic acid.

cool. I'll try the
acetone 1st. I'm going to tip the tank on it's side, and use plain non-clumping cat litter
to coral the work area. This way I make sure no drip or anything hits seams.
Thanks
guys! http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

You're right, I'm wrong, it is acetic acid that is
the silicone solvent (must have been sniffing too much of the stuff). Try white distilled vinegar.
If you need something stronger check photo stores of acetic acid where it's used as a
"stop" in printing photos in a darkroom.

ah, thanks Mike... I went
looking for acetone last night and didn't find it.
Vinegar shouldn't work
should it? makes me worry about all the times I've used straight vinegar to clean a tank of
hard water deposits... http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif

can you believe that the hardware store
didn't know they had any then? They also told me to head to Wallymart for nail polish
remover... maybe it's just cheaper.
Anyhow, will try vinegar 1st followed by
acetone to see if these work.
Then on to the cedar racking... http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
