As some of you probably know, i

hold 3 breeding colonies of these delightful fish.

Out of a recent bunch of fry maybe 4

months old, i have noticed that a few fish are not coloured as their parents but are completely

black with red eyes and fin tips. http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif

I can be sure their parents are the real

mccoy and not hybrids as they came from stock held by Anton Lamboj. Does anyone know if this is a

natural sport or have i a freak pair of parents with an oligomelanic gene which has thused caused

this mutation. I am interetsted to see how they grow out.

I know nothing about Konia,
but about 10 years ago I had a pair of managuese that regularly spawned. About 1/8th of the spawn

would be almost entirley devoid of bars or any dark color, 2 or 3 individuals would turn out almost

entirely dark. If I left the spawn in the community the light ones would be picked off 1st, the

dark next. A few light ones made it to adulthood, but I always found them unappealing compared to

the normal color. Wanted to grow the dark but they always got away from me, but not the predaters.

Sports showing up in captive

strains of fish are not uncommon. In fact, these sports are often the genetic precursors for tank

strains that vary from wild type coloration. Do you know how far from wild your fish are, and if

your fish are all from the same line? If they are all from the same line, then the chance of

inbreeding and generating a sport is increased.

These young are f2 and the

parents are possibly half siblings from separate spawnings. i'm thinking around the sport idea

so i''ll see what happens.
