Hi there first time here. I
have a 150 gal tank that I beleave I have 2 300 watt heaters in. I want to go to having just one.
The question I have is what watt will I need? Ive seen 500, 800 and 1000. Also any brands better
then another?

In a tank longer than
4' I would use two or more heaters, unless of course all of the water goes to a sump. You can
get away with a single heater in a sump because you are guaranteed that thw water is going to pass
over the water.

In theory 5 watts per
gallon will give you the ablility to keep the tank up to 10º above the room temperature. So, 150
gallons, 750 watts, if you're in that range of temps. Brand, I guess I'm old school, I
prefer ebo-jager's heaters.
A point in your favor, it takes a bigger change in room
temp to get tanks larger than a 75g to change their temps. A 150 should be even more stable.
TIP: I also agree on two vs one heater. Set one slightly below the other's setting and
only one will come one unless the other is needed. Dan

using a heater controller
is even better for multiple heaters, but they are not cheap.

I use 2 instead of 1, in case one
gets stuck in the heat on position, one with less wattage might not be enough to poach your fish.
One with high wattage just might cook um.
