View Full Version : Apisto and salt?
Hey there!
My name is
Nir Tzabar and I am from Israel.
I have a question...
Do you thing apistos can live and
breed in ~60 ppm of salt?
Thank you..

This brings up an
interesting point. I've never checked for salt in our water. So, I don't know if you can or
not. I'm sure someone will be able to help.
As a sidenote, I'd thought I'd
let people see the levels of salinity in fresh/seawater.
Fresh water - Less than 1,000
ppm
Slightly saline water - From 1,000 ppm to 3,000 ppm
Moderately saline water - From
3,000 ppm to 10,000 ppm
Highly saline water - From 10,000 ppm to 35,000 ppm
FYI
Ocean water contains about 35,000 ppm of salt.
Brackish water contains under 10,000 ppm of
salt.
Brine water contains around 40,000 ppm of salt.

I have not added NaCl to
any of my apistogramma tanks, but I have heard that it can help to have a small amount of salt if
your water has a very low conductivity.
Are you adding this salt? and is is regular NaCl or
some other salt mix like sea salt?

I'd say NO, Apistos need very soft water to breed and
adding salt raises the mineral content of the water.
