View Full Version : Do larger tanks make it harder for convicts to pair?

I set up my 180gallon tank, and decided just to make it a giant cichlid tank... Maybe just a giant convict only tank.

Well, my convicts were pairing and spawning like crazy in a 38 gallon hexagonal tank I had...

I put all 4 of them in the 180, and added 2 other females (now making 3 males and 3 females).
For some reason, they're not pairing. Water temperature is right. They're well fed. Just not pairing now.

It's been a few weeks. I even used water from the 38 and another 55 gallon tank to get the fish bacterias going... A good deal of water.
pH couldn't be that off yet.
And the additional water added has been treated.

So, last thing I could think off... Is the size of the tank for some reason keeps them from chasing a mate down and pairing?
Whatcha think?

ps. none of them are larger than 2.5 inches.

Thanks,
Chris

As long as you have a male and a female, I doubt they will have any trouble finding each other, and you'll soon have a 180 full of convicts. Good luck!

I agree. Nothing to worry about. The still seem to be young (based on size), so their breeding cycles aren't fully established yet. With a little more maturity they'll be more consistent producers.
