brine shrimp flakes - do not overfeed
overfed fish do not need to eat and will not eat on a regular basis

I like to feed the freshly hatched baby brine shrimp, black worms, and mosquito larvae. I also feed freeze dried krill, plankton and mysis. I think they do better with some live foods and the are more apt to breed. I also feed a general cichlid staple flake or pellet. They like a variety, but you do have to be careful not to overfeed, I do think it is better to keep them lean and mean!
The Brichardi types should readily come out and eat. The calvus and comps are more timid, and slower eaters also consider that as an ambush predator they don't eat everyday. You don't want to house the calvus and comps with something that is eating all the food before they can get any, otherwise you are likely to starv them.
If your fish won't eat what you offer them, it must either be bad food, or they aren't hungry. Stop feeding them for a 3 or 4 days if you can stand it, and then offer food again.
If you're talking about mature fish, not fry, the food I've found that no fish can refuse is PE Mysis Shrimp. It's very oily and stinky -- apparenty just what a fish loves! Make sure to rinse it well in a small net or something similar before feeding.
Look for it at stores that cater to reef enthusiasts. Also, you can soak pellets in the oil from the shrimp to help switch them over (PE Mysis can get a bit expensive if used regularly).
