Just found out first finger exactly how bad a$$ dovii really are. My dovii is a little guy at 6". I feed him a shrimp every couple of days. Feed him by hand too which is really cool.
That is until he MISSES the shrimp. WOW! I can only imagine what a 20" dovii does when it hits prey, cuz my litlle guy really whacked me. Got one little hole in the tip of my index finger.

We hear that cichlid keepers mess with wild type fish by selecting certain characteristics for breeding. Maybe it is the cichlids that select who will and who will not keep them.

Hahaha! I broke my hand in '09, and right after I "hought it was healed I had a feeding "accident" with my monster dovii. It scared me half to death! Good thing it was just a love peck from an impatiently hungry fish! It was like when you narrowly avoid a car wreck and have to pull over to catch your breath! :D

i had that happen at a store once. stupid me, saw the big guy following me in the tank. so i put my finger over the tank, about 5" above the water. SNAP, now my finger bleeding. my friends are laughing at me saying 'why did you do that?' stupid me thought that 10" fish could not jump that high.....
it is one of those things like licking a 9v battery, you know its gonna hurt but you do it anyway.

I hate you so much right now!!!!!!
Hahahahahahahahaha! ;)
I've had a Midas open up a little blood flow once while cleaning the tank. Glad it was still small at the time.

Maybe you should give your dovii the middle finger instead!
Back in the mid 1980s I made my first cichlid video (on VHS). In it I can be seen pointing out convict eggs with my hand in the tank until the female bites me. It didn't draw blood or even hurt but it did make me jump and look like a fool. Thanks, fish, but I don't really need your help in that department.

Dean, the first fish I ever bred were convicts. And as a 12 year old I was amazed how they would FEARLESSLY attack my arm. No pain, but yes, quite the shock affect.

I can't recall whether convicts were my first breeding success with cichlids, or if it was kribs or jewels. They all bred at about the same time for me. The jewels were the nastiest to other fish but the convicts were the bravest I've ever seen at protecting fry from people, particularly the females.
