Maybe you ought to write

them down on the tank with water soluble marker, or add a tag to the tank, or just write the names

down in a journal.... http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Sorry, can't

tell you the peacock type.

Hi there, it looks to

me like an Aulonocara saulosi

Tim
10-26-2006, 9:35 PM
Possibly a A. saulosi, allthough

the snout doesn't look quite elongated enough. I would have said A. sp. chitande, but I

don't see any yellow in the pelvic fins. Was also thinking A. stuartgranti from Chitimba.
Allthough they're found under a million different names, A. stuartgranti seems to be the most

frequently found in shops.

Also you should be aware that

sp. turkis is a hybrid. Hybrids are frowned upon in the hobby.

what isnt a hybrid?

The first thing I look for

when buying cichlids is who is the breeder. Does the breeder sell hybrids or is the breeder known

for selling only fish that can be found in Nature.

Sometimes that is not possible when a

great fish comes along and I do not know the breeder. I check the name on fish. I look for a

scientific name indicating that seller cares enough to correctly id the fish.

I prefer

to purchase with collection point of ancestors present. This indicates that fish are not many

generations removed from lake, river, etc.

Now I look at them. If they do not look like

the species in question then I reject them. This is generally not possible with fry. Thus when I

buy fry and grow them out and find something other than what was advertizied that fish seller is

off my buy list.

PS I see you like large fish. There some large haplochromines from

Lake Malawi that are nice to look at. Albeit, not as nice as many Aulonocara.

the breeder is well known around this area, from the

OCA, many of the show fish you see around here have come from them, has been doing this for a Very

long time and has a LOT of different sp.
i think i counted 170??+- tanks they had last i was

over.
and almost all africans.
and i remember seeing may placks for breeder awards.
really the last person i though would be selling hybrids..... maybe they dont know?
are you

guy sure its a hybrid?

i dont have a clue.

bobrfish

Ask the breeder if turkis is

a hybrid. If breeder is not sure then why buy from someone who does not know the history of fish

they breed and sell?

I originally heard turkis were line bred by Europeans. It is

defintely not from Lake Malawi.

I know for a fact that some judges will give a turkis

zero points in a show.
