I went and picked this pond up over the weekend a friend no longer wanted it. It was brand new but he never set up. His dogs and kids played on it. There is a crack in the plastic, would like to know if any one has every patch one? How would go about it?

MacCourt makes a patch kit for preform ponds. However splits like that are generally not repairable as the crack will continue to run and eventually get out from under the patch. I would suggest drilling a small hole at the tip of each end of the split to stop it from continuing to rip apart. Then cover the whole thing up with Patching Tape. Patching tape is about 6-8" wide and adhesive on one side. It comes on a roll and can be cut to length. Clean the inside area of the pond thoroughly with dish soap and water and allow to air dry. Then apply the patching tape. No guarantees but it should hold.

Jim,
I have used fiberglass repair kits (resin and cloth) to patch cracks on Rubbermaid tubs in the past.

That was quick, "Thank You " one question do I still need to drill the holes at the ends of the crack if I use the tape?

Yes. You have to stop the split from spreading. A 1/8" drill bit should be enough to stop the tearing. It needs to be right at the tip so that the hole goes beyond the edge of fault.

Phil,
Did you ever use fiberglass on a preformed PVC pond liner? The Rubbermaid stock tanks are made from structural foam and i am pretty sure they are not pvc. I was wondering if the fiberglass and resin would adhere to a pvc material.

Provided the fiber glass resin's adhesion is not weakened by the acids that plastics often bleed I don't see why that could not be a solution. Of course if one felt industrious you could view the pond liner as a mold to make an unlimited amount of ponds. ;)
My concern runs along the lines of why silicone does not adhere to plexiglass. (nerd thought I know) One thought might be an epoxy made to bond plexi and other plastics (not a weld but a bonding agent). Just an additional option.

I was lead to Dow Corning 795 silicone by a friend/LFS owner for acrylic patching. It seems to work on a wide variety of other plastics, HD foams and even rubber. Not available in clear but it sure seals and holds well. Might be locally available for you but I found mine on Amazon, about 11$ per tube. Good luck!

If all else fails, I think simply taking a candle lighter and lightly melting the plastic so that it gets rid of the crack, and then you can try to epoxy/patch it up. I don't know how well that would work out, but you could try if nothing else works and you're about to throw it out.
