Melanochromis exasperatus or is it

What is the correct name?

Neither name is correct.
The fish appears to be Labidochromis textilis, Oliver 1975.
Female Melanochromis
joanjohnsonae, Johnson, 1974 are similar but males are blue. Since there are no blue males in
image, it is not likely they are Melanochromis. Burgess, 1976 redescribed M. joanjohnsonae as
Melanochromis exasperatus. The first name, Melanochromis joanjohnsonae, is the correct name for
blue males and females appearing much like those in image.

Both male and female, I spawed
some from the fish. No other fish in the tank but the Exasperatus. "The Cichlids of Lake
Malawi" CD-rom by Ad Konings. States it to be a textilis but a Synonym(s) of a exasperatus,
location Londo, Mozambiqe.
So could I would say its a textilis, with a trade name of
exasperatus.

It is odd that Ad
states that on CD. See Lake Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat,3rd edition. On page 42, his
image of Melanochromis joanjohnsonae is there for examination as well as some Labidochromis
textilis. It is on page 176 that Ad place an image of Labidochromis textilis similar to the one
you site on Fishpost website.
Exasperatus is not a trade name, it is the species name
Burgess gave to Melanochromis joanjohnsonae. Thus, Melanochromis exaspertus is a junior synonym
for Melanochromis joanjohnsonae. Dr. Burgess was unaware that Johnson had described the fish
before he did. Paul Loiselle has questioned whether M. joanjohnsonae (M. exasperatus) belongs in
Melanochromis genus and argues that it should be reassigned to Labidochromis genus. Even if this
view previals, the name exasperatus is still out. Neither M. joanjohnsonae or L. textilis have a
trade name. The use of exasperatus should be dropped as soon as possible to avoid confusion.

I believe it is textilis, I have
not gone back to update that page since I put it up years ago.
I know, bad me. They are
being marketed as Labidochromis exasperatus in some areas. I guess I need to update my page.
