THESE GUYS ARE ON THE ENDANGERED LIST SO I THOUGHT ID SEE IF I COULD BREED THEM. THEY BRED LAST MONTH FOR THE 2ND TIME IN 6 WEEKS! UNFORTUNEATELY THE FIRST SET OF FRY ATE THEIR NEW SIBLINGS AS SOON AS THEY HATCHED AND WERE WIGGLERS. :( I DIDNT HAVE ANOTHER SPARE TANK BUT I ASSURE YOU WONT HAPPEN AGAIN. ;) I WAS ACTUALLY SURPRISED MOM AND DAD ALLOWED IT TO HAPPEN, BUT THEY DIDNT SEEM TO MIND. HERE ARE A FEW PICS THE PARENTS ARE WILD CAUGHT.

Parents will sometimes let that happen. Sometimes they even appear to provide eggs and/or fry just for the purpose of feeding the older fry.
Here are some Texas cichlids: Mama, babies, and eggs/food.

Here, in contrast, are some brasiliensis types where the parents are chasing away the fry so that they can breed again.

As you can see, the fry are hampered from leaving by an invisible wall.

Nice Pics UnckleRuckus and Dean; thank you for sharing. I am glad your La cieba seem to be spawning regularly.
Dean, are those "Bahia Red" in the last photo? How big where they when they spawned? and what size did they eventually reach? Male? Female?
Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
Their identity is a good question. I got these roughly 20 years ago, back before anyone dreamed up the name "Bahia Red," and this photo was taken in 1993, I believe. (I'd have to go back to the original slide from which it was scanned to be sure.) I got them as Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus. Back then it was common for people to sell various 'G.' brasiliensis types as Gg. rhabdotus and, indeed, that is what these turned out to be, which I confirmed by having a deceased sibling x-rayed and looking at the supraneurals.
In the posted photo, the female (lower fish) was about 5" SL and the male about 6" SL. I sold them later that year at the ACA convention in Minnesota since I needed to move to a house without a fishroom. :(

I got some from TUIC (3-3 1/2 inch size) in February, and I already have a pair that spawned in a 55. I removed some fry to a 29 gallon, but I don't see any swimming around in there any more. There is still a small group of fry left in with the parents in the 55 that I didn't manage to catch. Then this morning I noticed a new batch of eggs. Some were laid in a flower pot, others on some small stones next to the flower pot. I'm thinking about grabbing a couple of the stones and putting them in the 29.
I'll keep an eye on the 55 and see what happens to the old fry still in there.

Here is a video I just shot of the situation I described this morning.

In these 2 pics you can see the eggs on the stones in front of the pot and some eggs inside the pot. You can also see the some older free swimming ry on the right side of the pics close to the pot.

HERE ARE A FEW PICS THE PARENTS ARE WILD CAUGHT. That's exactly what happened to me. I thought about removing some of the stones with eggs on them, but this time around I didn't want to interfere. I wanted to see for myself. And sure enough, the same thing happened. The small group of fry left were allowed to live. And today when I expected some wigglers to hatch, I saw the old fry chowing down, I'm pretty sure I even saw a tiny little tail sticky out of one of the fry's mouths. Took a quick video, but it was hard to capture the carnage commited by the older siblings.
