I hear there are two or three

collecting locations in Costa Rica where lyretail convicts have been collected.

Does

anyone know the name of those collection locations?

Thanks.

Any older male convict will

delvelope fins like that. I have a 5" that has extreme fin extentions, Now getting LT genetics

fixed on smaller fish I've not heard of. Nor wild LT convicts. Most wild fish don't have

any fin extentions. Ken

I quoted two

authorities on convicts in the other forum
http://www.minnfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2853
Each had a slightly

different explanantion. One was the same as you folks, It is an old male.
However, the other authority had a different view expoused by my original post in this thread.

My purpose in bringing the discussion here was to get more opinion and gladly welcome it.

Thanks.

When you first mentioned a lyretail convict I pictured something more like a

lyretail molly or a brichardi, with a crescent-shaped tail. When I saw the photo it brought to mind

a female high-finned lyretail sword.

Do you remember the convicts collected by

Lioselle, Conkel and Mitchell from their trip to various sites wthin Mexico? They found a red form,

a yellow form and a green form. Despite super colors none of the morphs created any interest among

breeders. No one was willing to promote the new morphs rather than the old style. Comparing the 3

new forms to the extended tattered tail of the photo you showed, I'd prefer any of the more

colorful morphs. What is it that draws your interest?

If I had to cast a vote I'd

go with "old." I've had green terrors and red devils exhibiting the same tail. Dan

Every river within their

natural range has a different convict type fish in it, How the domestic convict got so ugly is

beyond me, We collected some in Honduras from the Rio Chuloteca with purpleish males with orange

tint in the fins with females with bright red bellies and orange and gold dorsals, Blows away the

domestic fish, I'm growing out some from panama with yellow pectorals. Wild fish rule. Ken

I'm no expert, but I

cant support the "old male" claim all that much. My male con is only about 1.5 years old

and has had fins like that for quite some time. He's only about 3-3.5" as well. I figured

this was quite common?

Wild caught Rio Chuloteca

male and female, a very small species, may or may not be C. nigrofasiatus.

Love the color on the

smaller fish. Presume smaller fish is female.

You got it Bob, They are

great little fish, males top out about 2.5-3". All of my females are under 2". I tested a

proven female with some domestic males (3 black and a pink) and she doesn't like any of them at

all, put her back with a little male from the same collection and she breeds, makes me think they

may be a new species as she does not reconize the domestic males as co-specifics or as I have

always suspected that the domestic convict is a hybrid of several Cryptoheros species. Ken
