Well the unexpected happened...my F1 Midas passed for no aparent reason. Water params checked and the small convict and xilo in the tank are fine.

I did a 25% water change and this weekend found this at my LFS (no not petsmart) a Midas...probablly a cross though. This store is the best in our area as far as cichlids go, though they do specialize more in Africans.

I got him for a decent price for the quality of the fish. Let me know what you think.

I'm stunned by the death of my F1 and wish I knew what could cause such a sudden demise as he looked fine. Well, when one door closes, another opens I guess.:D

Fish have heart attacks and strokes too. Who knows, we all have our time.

Interesting perspective.....but true enough! Sometimes "he just died" is all that can be said. No need to overthink it! Hahaha!

OP, that's a super looking little guy!

Beautiful fish, looks more like a Labiatus to me though.Looks to have more of the slender body versus the high type body that a Midas would have.

He's currently about 5-6 inches TL.

Hi Kevin. I've been great...especially now that we have a new baby girl!

Love the new photos. That fish is a keeper!

The outdoor tank is really a pleasure. We actually ran some dedicated power lines to it last weekend so that heating will be even easier this winter. I'm looking at a putting up a greenhouse for the season too. I haven't had any trouble keeping the temperature up (even with snow on the tank!), but a greenhouse would definitely conserve energy.

Glad to hear your little girl is doing well!! How old is she now? Any new pix?

I really like this fish, his personality is really starting to show. He's trying to bite me when I clean the tank, so I can only imagine what he'll be like when he's full grown.

I'd love to see pix of the tank as well, especially when the greenhouse is complete. Exciting stuff!!!:D

I would say he is definitely a cross. But still a very nice looking fish. I also think they will always look much better once on the home diet.
