I was in the process of

posting this reply to the thread in which I was referenced when the forum got hacked.

I'm fairly certian that Greg Steeves does not think that blue fire fins and red tail shellers

are the same fish. I'm checking those links and can't seem to find the reference. The

blue fire fin is not at all common anymore and I've not seen it in at least 5 years. Hopefully

there are still some about. They are undescribed and I wouldn't even guess at the lineage.

The red tail sheller is a molluskivore and should be considered a Platytaeniodus species. It might

possibly be a degeni varient or part of a species complex. Neither of these two fish should be

confused with the Paralabidochromis sp. "rock krib" complex. All three species are quite

distinct from each other.

My original post

disappeared.

Q#1 Does anyone believe blue fire fin and red tail

sheller are the same fish?

Q#2 Does anyone believe Greg Steeves image of

blue fire fin is something other than blue fire fin?
(the

orginal question included a link to Greg's image of blue fire fin but GAS has

provided an imbeded image, so that is no longer needed)

These are two seperate questions

and not necessarily related. I understand some will want to join the two questions and answer both

as if they are one question.

PS Thanks to cichlid for restoring the thread.

Previous to the thread disappearing I had replied that photo #2 was what I used to buy as a

"rock krib." gas has indicated he knows the fish as something else. Dan

Here is a blue

fire fin image.
http://petsforum.com/oca/images_2/galleryp...a/bluefire2.jpg (http://petsforum.com/oca/images_2/gallerypics/africa/bluefire2.jpg)

The

following image is quite different in comparison to GAS image #2 labeled blue fire

fin.
That is presumable a male

Another Victorian keeper post these images

of what he believes are blue fire fin and labels images as such.

Yet, beneath

the images he labels the fish as red tail shellers.

Perhaps there is some confusion

regarding the H. sp "blue fire fin" and a hobby name of H. sp. "blue neon"? I

believe the blue neon and red tail sheller to be one in the same.

That's my

(very old) picture and it is incorrectly labeled. They were sold to me as "blue neon"

but are in fact "red tail shellers". I must have had a blonde moment when labeling that

picture. Newer pictures can be found here:
<a href="http://african-

cichlid.com/RedTailSheller.htm" target="_blank">http://african-

cichlid.com/RedTailSheller.htm</a>

Jeff Natterer is with the Ohio Cichlid Association

and you can ask him about the "blue fire fins" in the other picture.

And just

to confuse you even more Thomas Utt (AfricanCichlidFanatic) has fish he refers to as “blue fire

fins” that looks different from both Gregs picture and Jeffs picture.
