I really like the pic on
cichlid forum and am interested in getting some of these fish.
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1751
Is the pic
for the pair a normal coloration?
Is the common and scientific names correct? I've had
some LFS say the names are wrong or they have never heard of these guys.
Thanks for
the help.

Pat..
Those are
very cute! I have Lamprologus Meleagris/Stappersi.. common name Pearly Ocellatus.

I would believe that the name there is correct, but they may be
called other things as well. I would do a google search to see. I do know that shellies are not
that common at most LFS's so that also may be why you are having a hard time finding them. I
did get mine at the lfs, but I have a really good one. There is also a "gold" variation
of this fish.
I hope you can find some!
Sorry I wasn't of more help

the latin name is both
correct and incorrect at the same time http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
'Lamprologus' sp.
"Ornatipinnis Zambia" means that this is a geographical variant that has some claim to be
possibly considered as a new species.
Anytime you see part of the name in quotes, this
is not a true species name.
If "Ornatipinnis Zambia" turned out to be a regular
morph with intermittent hybrids to the regular L. ocellatus, then the name would begin to appear as
L. ocellatus (Ornatipinnis Zambia). If it does get described and recognized as a seperate species
then the quotes and 'sp.' drop out or a new name selected.
Your LFS is highly
unlikely to be able to order a specific variant, morph or undescribed species as what will come in
is highly unlikely to be the right fish.
If you want a specific variant or sub-species,
etc. your best bet is classified sections on boards like ACA or cichlid-forum
Hope that
helps.

This is a very
interesting topic, i personaly will said that ornatipinnis are one of my favorites shell dweller
cichlid. For a better ilustration i will permit to bring some information here, that im sure it
will help us a lot to understand better the behavior and procedence; Ad Konings in its book “
Tanganyika cichlids in their natural habitat” saids the following: “There are al least two species
of L. Ornatipinnis-like cichlids present in the lake, but the fish that is usually associated with
this name in the aquarium hobby is not the nominal species. L. Ornatipinnis was described by Poll
(1949) from specimens (78 types and 55 additional specimens) collected all over the lake. The
holotype was caught south of M`toto near the barrage of Moba. Remarkably Poll was unable to
find a female among the 133 specimens. - - - I have seen “Ornatipinnis Zambia” a Cape Kachase, Cape
Chaitika, Mbete Island, and at Isanga, and alltought it was never abundandt, it seems to be a
common species. Its behaviour is very similar to that of L. ocellatus, and both male and female
have their own shell, usually Neothauma. It is not known whether males-wich, like ocellatus like
species, have harems-hide shells in the sand until they are required for interested mates. An
interesting feature is that L. ocellatus buries its shell with the opening commonly at right angle
to the bottom while L. sp. Ornatipinnis zambia completely buries the shell with the opening almost
flush with the bottom. - - -“ I hope that this information will help us a lot to understand better
this great species, greetings
