Tropheus have been my

absolute favorite cichlids for the last 30 years. These are fish for people that love a good

roller coaster ride and have strong nerves because they take some getting used to. However, by

complying to some rules, these fish can be kept by anybody who is willing to make a commitment to

them. Be careful though not to catch the "Tropheus Syndrome" since it will surely

increase the size of your fish room. Ask Pam Chin, she knows............

Yeah I favor tropheus too, but

my "first love" is and always will be lamprologus ocellatus. I love there determination

whether it be protecting their shell from a fish five times there size or trying to bury it. http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif I will always love these little shell

dwellers of Lake Tangynika.

I certainly understand you

love for these little guys with a big heart. They are surely interesting and funny fish to watch.

What amazes me is their strength moving the shells around. The location of each shell changes

almost on a daly basis. The funniest thing however is when I clean the tank and the little female

comes storming out of her shell, grabbing my finger and holding on for dear life.

I love them too, but everybody

needs to know that you can't feed 'em like other cichlids...I know that because I got some

before researching them... http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif Feeding them "slimy" stuff, like frozen worms,

etc., will kill them. I imagine that they must be kept by themselves or with other

vegetarians...someday I will have a special tank just for them and I will never buy another fish

without doing my homework first.

Victoria, don't be too hard on

yourself. We all have made our mistakes. Important is that we learn from them and it appears to

me that you have.

I had my first Tropheus in the early 1970's. Nobody really know

much about them at that time and these poor creatures suffered greatly due to the food we were

giving them. I was part of the German Cichlid Association at the time and we learned quickly that

these fish are herbivores. Since then I feed a good spirulina flake only and all problems were

gone.

You don't have to keep them by themselves in species only tank as long as

their tank-mates are also herbivores. I have one tank with Tropheus, Petrochromis and

Eretmodus.

Good luck to you http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
