I have caught the Geophagus
fever. After many years of keeping Tanganjika cichlids exclusively, a good friend gave me some
Geophagus sp. "Tapajos red" and I instandly fell in love. These are one of the prettiest
cichlids I have seen.

It would be nice to hear from other hobbyists that have
experience with these fish.

Beautiful fish and nice shots. http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
I have been keeping this fish
for about three years now. It is the fish that converted me from being a long time Tanganyikan
mouthbrooder fanatic to a Eartheater aficionado. I have kept this fish as a pair and in larger
groups. Currently, I am keeping eight fish along with a few other species in a 180 gallon tank. I
have spawned them and given away fry to a few friends. They have proven to be biparental
larvophilous spawners. Water conditions do not matter much, my friend Ric Perez held them for me
for a few weeks in his tanks in water that was 400 parts TDS. Not only did they spawn in this
water, but the fry hatched. They are not particular about diet. I feed mine very small sinking
pellets and frozen bloodworms, they eat both with relish. I think they make a good starter
Geophagus, as they have amazing color in both sexes, don't grow large for a Geo, and have a
mild temperament. Amazing fish overall!

Thank you Eric.
I
received 6 of them at about 2" and lucky me, they turned out to be 3 pair. They went into a
4" 65g and have grown in there to about 5". They have spawned several times but have
always eaten the wigglers. At one time I had two pair spawn side by side

I am in the process of selling my group of 5 Cyphotilapia Frontosa
"Kigoma" and converting my 150g into a Geophagus tank. My 8 Geophagus Altifrons are
about 2,5" and I would like to provide both species with the room they deserve. Food wise I
have made the same experience then you Eric. They willing eat just about anything I give them
starting from brine shrimp to blood worms to mysis and even flakes.

I have 5 Geophagus altifrons and 4Geo(sold at an auction as)
pelligrini may be steindachs.
The altifrons are totally elegant, the red humps are amazingly
commical. Both sp. spawn regularly but they are in cichlid communities and never have been able to
save the fry. Thinking of ordering an egg tumbler. Anyone had experience with that new multi
chamber unit for Geos?

Including the caudal the altifrons are between 5-6 inches, they share a 150 gal
tank with 6 each Paretroplus menarambo & nourissatti, 6 Ptychochromis oligacanthus, a pair of
Stomatepia pindu, and 2 V macaulicada. The overcrowding spreads out any aggression and all hold
their own, it especially keeps the lamena from killing each other. In smaller groups the lamena can
be down right lethal to each other in a moments notice. All the inhabitants are comperable in size
except the smaller (4")black belts.
Not geographically correct, but, I like to have a sp
of Geo in each large community tank.
My 4 four"Geo red humps share a 100 gal with 6
small haits, some more pindu, a few Ptychos and 2 giant Etroplus suratensus. Again not
Geographically Correct but .......

Wow, that 150g must be a
beautiful sight. I am in the planning stage of converting my 150g into a SA tank. So far I have
3 pair of the G. Tapajos Red and 8 G. Altifrons that will inhabit this tank. It will be my first
New World tank in 20 years and I am looking very much forward to it's completion.

I must
admit the tank has a more utilitarian look than a beautiful one right now, I've strewn chunks
of PVC and flower pots around hoping the menarambo and lamena will spawn again. They did, last
year around this time, but because its a rough and tumble community nothing went past the eggs
stage, even when dividers were added. I'm going to try and artificially hatch the eggs this
time if I can.... the menarambo are starting to dig pits already and colors are darkening.

Very nice fish Klaus. When you
eventually have fry, let me know as I'd love to have some.
