I must say, that I am very

disappointed. There is only one Topic in one of the most interesting sections. Is there nobody

out there that keeps Tropheus or Petrochromis? If not, I will do my best to change that. There

are not many Cichlids that are more interesting then Tropheus and the looks, well check it out

yourself:

Well, I hope I got somebody interested to get into a little

dialog about these beautiful fish. Please, let's hear from all those Tropheus keepers.

Hey Klaus,

I am a big time Tropheus lover!!! I can't seem to get enough of this fascinating

cichlid! I usually try to contain myself and only keep a couple of species at a time, but all

of sudden I have about 7 or 8 different species going. Most are young groups that I am growing out

and can't wait until they start breeding.

I have practically wore out my Tropheus

Aqualog book just looking and slobbering on all the photo's!!! Currently I have

the following:

Tropheus duboisi 'halembe'
Tropheus sp. red

'moliro'
Tropheus moori 'ilangi'
Tropheus sp. 'blood chest'
Tropheus brichardi 'kipili
Tropheus moori 'red rainbow'
Tropheus sp. black

'kiriza'

I have not tried any Petrochromis in years, and I killed the last ones

I had, so I haven't gotten brave enough to try them again.

Hi Pam,
What a

pleasure to hear from you. Yes, I know that you are one of "us". I follow your articles

and of course "Ask Pam". You are one of the hobbyist's that give back to others and

help to keep this beautiful hobby alive. I hope that one of these days I will meet you at a

convention or anywhere else to talk Tropheus with you.
I remember getting my first Tropheus in

the early 1970's while I was a member at the German Cichlid Association (DCG) and that pretty

much did it for me. Boy, did I pay my dues during these early years. Everybody know a little bit

about these fish but nobudy really know a lot.
On my new website you can see my fish and set-

up. The website is not quite finished yet but you will get a good idea. www.buntbarsch.ca

Thanks for the reply,

Klaus

I am a huge Tropheus and

Petrochromis nut. I put up a few pics of some of my Petro. Famula in the Tanganyika section. I

have also submitted an article to the BB about Petros that will be published in the near future. I

have to admit that Petros are my passion now but I still have a few Tropheus colonies.

The Petro. Trewawasae are

my first. I keep Tropheus since the early 1970's but I guess I got fooled by all the articles,

reports and horror stories that are circulated in books and on the internet. I love a lively tank

and these guy's sure give me all the entertainment I am looking for. I am looking forward to

your article and I hope that you will set the facts straight.
Thanks for the response. It

would be really nice to get some sort of an "experience exchange" going on this forum

because I know from experience that especially keeping Tropheus can be an emotional roller coaster

ride.

Hey Klaus,

Thanks

for the kind words!! I hope that one day we do meet up and talk Tropheus until the wee

hours of the morning. Come on over to ACA this year, we are going to be in Texas, and it is sure

to be a fun time. I would also love to come to Europe and attend a fish gathering!

I feel like I have learned a lot about Tropheus over the years, but there is still plenty to

learn. Just when I think I know it all, they fool me. I always pick up a few tips when talking

with other Tropheus people that I have never thought of before. That is why fish keeping is so

much fun, there is more than one way to be successful, and it is always great to get a new

perspective.

I love to watch how they develop their social group and interact with

each other, I really don't care which species or color morph they are, the brown ones are as

exciting as the Ikola's or Red Rainbows!

Maybe it is time to try Petrochromis

again.... trewavasae is very nice!

If you are looking for a

good, hardy Petrochromis species try the Famula variants. In my experience their general care is

the same as we would offer for our Tropheus and they can be housed together. I keep my Famula

mixed with my Tropheus "Kachese." They get along great and breed like rabbits.

Famula will top out at about 6 inches and live in the same habitat as Tropheus so it really is a

great mix. I recommend you guys try it. http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Hi
I have Tropheus duboisi 13

of them in 55,I know its small, but my trophs are not wild or even close to being wild(tank raised)

and are very mellow,so think it will be ok.
I feed mainly Aquatrol 20,Nutrafin

spirulina, frozen Daphnia and a little Mysis on weekends.Got them as small fry ,straight out of the

Mothers mouths and into my tanks, watched the guy empty the females.Started them in a 29 and moved

them into a 55,at this moment they are anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 grownig very uneven, have 1 thats

started to lose his/her spots and reached adult coloration and nobody else is,seems the big 1 is

holding every body else back.
Very intresting fish and am very happy I chose to start this

tank.
Dont have much else to say, basicly just chimming in that I own Trophs.

Hey "Romwhi",
Sounds to me that you cought the "Tropheus Bug". http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif Welcome to the "club".
Your 55gal tank will

do just fine. I have a group of 19 wild Tr. Murago in a 65gal tank and they are doing just fine.

With the food I am very careful. I only feed a good spirulina flake.
Good luck,
Klaus

I feed mine Dainichi

veggie deluxe sinking pellets and have had great success with it. not one case of bloat while they

have been on this food. I'd wager that they are even overfed as I house them with my

Petrochromis and they eat like pigs.

Hi Buntbarshce,

I

just checked out your website and it was wonderful!!! Great photo's and good

advice! Your link page is fabulous, there are so many people that have no idea that there are

clubs in their area. I am not that familair with the clubs in Canada, so it will be a great source

for me to pass along.

I enjoyed the OCA photo's too. I have been wanting to go to

that event for a few years, and just haven't been able to swing it. But I do have it in on the

radar for this fall, I know a lot of the cichlid people there, and so I know it will be a good

time.

I am nearly at the end of a major remodel in my fish house, and I am really

thrilled with the way it is coming out. Finally I will have a fish lounge, so when fish friends

visit we can sit around and shoot the cichlid breeze.

Wow Pam, quite an

impressive fishroom. You have more tanks and fish than most of the stores here in Maryland. I

like the racks and the 60 gal flatbacks. Were you able to buy them in bulk?

Hi Pam,

Good to

hear from you again. You are one lucky women. What you have there is a dream come true.

Congratulations. I hope we get to see some pictures when the "fish lounge" is finished?

Thank you for the kind words about my website and I'm happy you enjoyed brausing

it.

The OCA event is surely worth visiting. There is a group of about 10 of us that go

there every year and there is never a dull moment. Good to hear that you are planning to attent

this year. That means that I will meet you in November at the latest and I sure look forward to

that.

Enjoy your new fish room,

Klaus

Hi Guys!

Glad

you like my fish house! It is really a lot of fun for me, I so enjoy my cichlids!

I have had those 60 gal Plexi tanks forever!! They came out of a hatchery in Central

California that closed down in the 80's. They are a little bit scratched up, but hold water

and are the perfect size for breeding many Malawi species, and for pairing off Tanganyikan

Substrate Spawners. I keep most of my Tropheus in larger show tanks in the house!

I

replaced all my wooden stands with these new metal stands made from unistrut. It is used a lot to

hang pipe and ductwork, I work for a Mechanical Contractor, so it is something I have good access

to. Its like tube steel, but it doesn't have to be welded, it is like an erector set,

everything is bolted together. I can't believe the extra room and access I have gained, since

the wood took up so much more room, and blocked the light. Hopefully they will last a

lifetime!!

Can't wait to party with you and your bunch at OCA!!

Hi Pam,

Great setup and beautiful fish.

Just wondering

where you acquired those caves as seen in "Julidochromis transcriptus" picture in the

above link? I'd love to get some of those.

Your new fishroom looks awesome

Pam. I am counting the days till the ACA Convention in Texas. Look forward to seeing everyone

there. http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif Mark me down for some

edwardi "cobue" in Texas Pam if you have some. http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif The "Undu Reef" Lemon Jakes I

got from you in Cincy look very nice. I got a group from another friend to diversify the

bloodlines and I can't tell them apart. They all look great.

Hi Led,

Thanks! Hey I am counting down the days to ACA myself! Texas should be a blast!

Send me an email a couple of weeks before ACA, and I'll send you a list of what I have

available.

And don't forget the Babes In The Cichlid Hobby Silent Auction! And

by demand we will be doing an Oral Auction also with Guy Jordan Fish.

Hi Jay,

So sorry,

but some how I missed your question about the caves.... are you still looking for them?

Here are a couple of sites that have some neat stuff. These new designs for the compressisceps

and calvus types are really nice, and I find the Julies love them too.
