Recently found Neolamprologus
tetracanthus, lyretail. Are this from Lake Tanganyika or an aquarium strain of fish? Any other
information about location in Lake Tanganyika is appreciated.

Bob, I have seen this
variant around for years. I believe the occur naturally in the lake though I am not 100%
positive.

Scratch that Bob.
It's early and I read Brichardi instead of Tetracanthus. I can't say I have ever heard of
a lyretale strain of that species.

I don't think they are
necessarily 'lyretail'. As N. tetracanthus grow older they develop weird extensions
on the caudal fins. I've seen them referred to as 'lyretail', 'combtail' and
even 'flagtail' tetracanthus before. I've never seen young specimens with any of the
odd fin growth, it is always older specimens. I think it is natural in that it is not man made but
not natural in that they don't develop these extensions in the wild either due to aggression,
predation or a shorter life span expected in wild fish.

Hi Marcus,
This is
the third group of tetracanthus passing through my fish room. The first two groups had rounded
caudal fins. The caudal fins of this group are not round, they are not lyre like yet. Presently
they appear truncate.
Thanks for the input.

I have never kept the
following N. tetracanthus

I believe this
lyretail tetracanthus to be an aquarium strain.
