View Full Version : Anyone ever done a club to club box swap?

I've read a few threads
on some forums about clubs that buddy up with a club elsewhere. They've swapped a box of fish
to introduce new fish to an area since local availability from region to region can be so
different.
We do get some very nice WC cichlids, verified, from Germany to Toronto.
Many of the F1s aren't that expensive up here...
it might be interesting if a
club in the US wanted to try a box swap with the Mississauga Fish club.
Anyone think
they would be interested in talking about this more?

Our club, Capital Cichlid
Association, has done this in the past and it worked out great. I will direct our president, Pat
Kelly, to this thread and let him get in contact with you.

Our club has
done this two times so far. It brings new blood and interest to the meetings.
Some of the
items that come in are interesting and some are the same type of fish some of us already have.
It's a chance you take. Usually the club gets donations from the members and pays to ship the
box. The money is recouped from selling the fish that you get. The hard part is usually getting
some one to collect and ship the fish. I wonder if shipping across the boarder will be a problem?
I will send this thread to our exchange chair person.

Hey Damian...
The problem with shipping over country lines is the fees involved.
It might be
possible if someone in the club has the permits .. on both ends ( correct me if I'm wrong
someone). I don't think anyone that belongs to our club has those though http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif ... At least not to my knowledge ( Pat.... only person that
might, that I have not thought to ask, is Discus Hans)
You might be able to find a club
that does though... if somone in you club does as well.
Shipping the fish out, for our
club, causes the biggest problem.... Finding somone to do this each and every time is quite
difficult. Since, not everyone knows how to ship, I have offered my help to people that
haven't shipped before so that they can learn how to ship.
Getting fish donated
seems to be one of the easier tasks.
I receive the fish so that hasn't caused any
problems.

Now the Maryland area in the
US may not be such a big hurdle... bringing fish across the border is usually pretty straight
forward as long as we pay the sales tax... I have no idea about taking fish to the U.S. so 'll
have to check...
I have family in Maryland, just outside of DC, so there's
possibilites of personally flying/ driving instead of shipping... I'll look into some things
and get back to you...
to give you an idea of what is locally available from MFC members..
The import route of the WC parents is known...
F1 Placidochromis sp.
"Phenochilus Tanzania”
F1 Pseudotropheus Polit “Lion’s cove”
F1 Cynotilapia sp.
"Mbamba"
F1 Copadichromis trewavasae Mloto Likoma
F1 Placidochromis sp.
Electra Blue
so if we can work out details... it's not the common Africans that
are around in Mississauga... I think it'd be worth figuring it out if possible...

Look into it....
but I'm pretty sure the fish will be stopped at customs then they will require a quaranteen for
a certain amount of time. The stories I've heard... end in dead fish. They could just be
stories though http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
We'd be
interested in doing a box exchange with your club.... if the fees aren't too high and it's
possible without killing the fish. If you come down to our area... I'm sure driving
wouldn't cause these problems.
Just shoot me an email... or you know where to find
me http://cichlid.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Sarah, Shipping across the
US/Canadain border is not a problem if you use Fed-ex. I do it ll the time. It does take two days
even with priority. No import permit needed. Ken

Do you label the fish as
fish though Ken? When I contacted any sort of carrier (UPS FedEx, etc.) the story I got was.
"We do not take fish across the border. Either alive or dead (frozen fish)."
If someone was close to the border they can carry the fish across themselves. It shouldn't be
a big problem unless it's a lot of fish.

Thanks Ken....
I had heard of a few people I know doing what you said.... but it was only for a small box of
fish.... 6 or so fish.
But I had also heard that some fish ..... even through your
method... were still stopped.
Have your shipments ever been stopped?
