bad pic I know.
However, George at Piranha Realms has
about 12 of these in a 4,000g aquarium.
He said they were Madagascan Polleni.
I am
going to send him a copy of the priority list and see how many fish he is maintaining on the
list.
He has some 1/4" Altum Angel Fry growing out since 4-17-08. I was impressed
by those!
He breeds all his cichlids with very little intervention as 4,000g
aquariums with subdued lighting seem to make them feel very much at home!
I will
update if George has any fish on the list.
George is also a ACA Lifetime member, so I am
trying to get him to log on and participate!

4,000 gallon tank
sounds interesting.
If there is any evidence the pictured fish ancestors once swam in
Ambassuana (Ambazoana) River within Madagascar and ancestors within captivity have not been crossed
with any other Paratilapia collected from other Madagascar locations, then yes it is Paratilapia
polleni. P. polleni spot size is medium amongst spot sizes found on various collection locations
for Paratilapia. Also spots of Paratilpia polleni will sometimes appear blue.
If there is no
evidence to support ancestorally history and breeding history, then it would be incorrect to call
this fish Paratilapia polleni.

Thanks Bob!
I will have to get with George and find out what all he has going on.
He has hundreds
of cichlids in his 12~ 4,000g tanks and he has 4 or 6 river tanks that look about 16" long if
I measured right.
Here are some more pics I took today of other fish...
Some
Africans...

Rich,
The
reflection of the chair is perfectly placed, probably couldn't do that again if you tried.

No you
don't! At least not that size........4' x 8' x 16'!! We did build a
smaller one 8' x 8' to test.
Here's some pics from the beginning, though not a
lot of detail.

Back in the good-old-days ( 60s &
70s), plywood tanks were the order of the day coated with polyester boat resin, epoxy, asphaltum,
marine paint or what have you.. I've constructed lots of them with very good results.. Beside
being cheaper to make , they hold temperature better & are much less prone to breakage than
glass tanks.. I built my last ones back in the 90s -120 gallon grow-out vats..
Using burlap
is something that I never considered but would be appreciably less expensive than glass cloth &
I'll wager, easier & less itchy to work with...
Whoops, I forgot about my patio pond
which was 4'x 8' x 20" style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif .....

George is old school and
built many a plywood tank back in the day! He's known as "the guy with the big
tanks" by all the old-timers around here since back then he was one of the only ones doing it
in St. Louis. He also worked with/for Otto Beldt "back in the day", a name many old-
timers are familiar with.
BTW - the burlap was my idea that I picked up somewhere on the
internet. He was going to use fibreglass cloth. Another trick I picked up was adding sand to the
final coat on the ground. This way, if substrate was used, the fish moving it around wouldn't
reveal wood/burlap. Or if no substrate was used, you still have an eye-appealing bottom.

Oooops!! Bad info! George was interviewed on PetFishTalk.com last week on their
weekly internet show. Replays can be heard on their site.
