Hi Bob, Nice list! I

got a question for you. I have entered a P. oligacanthus "Nossibeensis" in the Show for

the last two year, In 2003 I listed it (Ptychochromis nossibeensis) as you have it listed here.

Loiselle was the judge and changed the name to oligacanthus and told me later they were all the

same species just different collection locations. What's your opinion? It is most certainly the

red fin Nossibeensis (got them from Ron Neilson) and has placed 2nd in that class two years in a

row. I have a lot of fry and just wondered what I should sell them as. I also have the oligacanthus

from Juba which is very simialr but without any red in the fins of the males. Ken

Hi Ken,

Sparks found that there is enough similarity in DNA of P. oligacanthus and P. nossibeensis that

they are same fish. On Nosy Be island there are nine lakes and each has P. oligacanthus in it.

There is also P. oligacanthus on mainland. Thus there are ten or more possible color morphs of P.

oligacanthus.
Also according to Sparks, juba is a native name mostly used to identify P.

inornatus and rarely used to identify P. oligacanthus.
Regarding your fish, it is unlikely

they are P. inornatus. Check with source and see if they know where the fish was collected. If

they do then imo they could be sold as Ptycochromis oligacanthus, "location". It is

common practice for dealers and retailers to create names like Red fin oligacanthus or Nosy Be fire

fins.

Changed database to conform to Sparks findings. Thanks for catching that. Need

more readers like you Ken.
Would like to raise a few of your P. oligacanthus myself. We will

talk later.

Ken and anyone else,

If you have images of fish from this list, please post them starting a new thread. Discussion

about that species will hopefully follow. Use whatever name you believe is valid, that will be

sure to spark some discussion.

Thanks, Bob

I have many pictures of some

of these over the years. Would you think it best to post in the CARES section as most are

endangered?

Yes, images could go into

cares section.

I will likely comment about images in another thread now that they have

come up.
