Did you successfully spawn any cichlid species in 2007? Have you written any cichlid-related articles for your club journal? The American Cichlid Association (ACA) would like to give some kudos to hobbyists who are actively working with cichlids and writing about them. 2008 will be the first year for two new recognition programs, the ACA Cichlid Breeder Awards and the ACA Cichlid Writer Awards.
These two new programs were established by the ACA Club Liaison committee as a part of an overall effort to provide more support from the ACA to local and regional aquarium societies. The ACA already has established programs to support your club, including the ACA Show Sanctioning and ACA/ZooMed Speaker programs. More information about these opportunities can be found on the ACA website (http://www.cichlid.org ), or by contacting the ACA Club Liaison Chairman (Ted Judy at tjudy@tedsfishroom.com).
If you would like your club to participate in these programs, please let your leadership know. Better yet, volunteer to be the contact person between your club and the ACA Club Liaison. That person’s only job will be to put together the packet of award submissions in the Spring, and to receive regular communications (via email) from the ACA about these an other ACA programs and events.
The Breeder Awards will recognize the top breeders in each club that submits a list of qualifiers to the ACA. The top breeders from the pool of all qualified entries will also be given awards. A hobbyist qualifies by being active in a club’s Breeder Award Points (BAP) program. Each participating club will be asked to submit a list of their top five cichlid breeders and the species that they spawned in 2007. The ACA will award certificates to each breeder submitted, and the top breeder in each club is in the running for the overall awards. Since each club has its own BAP point system, the awards will be based upon total species spawned. The ACA will also recognize the top cichlid-breeding clubs, based upon the total number of cichlid entries to the club’s BAP program in 2007. The club award will be given to the top cichlid-specific club and to the top all-species club.

The Writer Awards will recognize the top authors who have written about cichlid topics in 2007. Each participating club will be asked to submit articles on cichlid topics, as many as they want to, that were published in the club’s journal or on their website in 2007. The articles will be categorized by the ACA. The authors of the top three articles in each category will be awarded certificates. The cichlid-specific and all-species clubs that submit the best overall collections of articles published in 2007 will also be given club awards. Exceptional authors will also be invited to submit original articles to be published in the ACA Bundtbarsche Bulletin. The categories are
- Species Breeding Account
- Genus/Group Overview
- Conservation
- Travel Log
- General Husbandry (to include any article not placed in another category)
